MANILA – A health expert on Wednesday debunked several misconceptions about hepatitis, an illness defined by the inflammation of the liver.

Speaking to dzMM, Dr. Rey Salinel Jr. warned that hepatitis can also be developed through non-infectious means.
“Ang misconception ng mga tao kapag sinabing hepatitis ay nakakahawa. Pero ang hepatitis ay galing sa word na ‘hepar’ which means liver and ‘itis’ ay inflammation. So kahit anong pamamaga ng atay, ang tawag ay hepatitis. So hindi lamang infectious, mayroon ding non-infectious,” he said on “Magandang Gabi, Dok”.
Salinel said long-term alcohol consumption and over-the-counter drugs including paracetamol may induce hepatitis.
He added that excessive amounts of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) may also cause the inflammation of the liver.
Water-soluble vitamins, including B and C, on the other hand, will be flushed out by the body, explained Salinel.
Among those at risk of getting hepatitis are those who are living a stressful lifestyle, cigarette smokers, diabetic patients, alcoholics, and those who take excessive amounts of over-the-counter drugs.
Salinel said taking gluthathione pills may help in preventing hepatitis because the amino acid acts as an anti-oxidant.
Glutathione is also found in green leafy vegetables like broccoli and malunggay.
“Aside from making your skin fairer, ang glutathione ay para sa ating liver,” said Salinel.
He added that since hepatitis does not usually have symptoms, the public should regularly take blood tests.
“Karamihan ng mga hepa C patients ay walang pinapakitang senyales, kaya the only way to find out is through blood test,” he said.
